PRAYERS & INTERCESSIONS
The
Prayer of Peace
(Adapted from WCC’s Jerusalem Prayer on May 30, 2010)
Gracious God our Heavenly Father, Creator and Sustainer of each human life;
Sovereign Lord and awesome God,
We give You thanks and praise for Your precious gift to us of Your only Son, Jesus Christ
– His birth in Bethlehem, His ministry throughout the Holy Land, His death on the Cross
and His Resurrection and Ascension. He came to redeem this land and the world. He
came as the Prince of Peace, and will come again to bring all things in heaven and on
earth together under His reign, according to Your will.
We give thanks to You for every church and parish around the world that is praying
with one voice for peace and justice. We are much in need of peace in this corrupt and
violent world.
In Your immeasurable mystery and love for all, which You have purposed in Christ, let
the power of Your redemption and Your peace remove all barriers and fill the hearts of
all who serve You in various parts of the world which are troubled in great violence.
We especially bring before Your throne Your peoples of Israel and Palestine. We
remember Your Holy City, Jerusalem. We remember Sudan. We remember Myanmar. We remember North Korea.
Lord, there is great suffering. We confess Lord that we don’t know what to do when
faced with such grave evil before us. So Lord, we run to You and seek Your face, for You
are a just and good God. Lord, rain down Your justice. Do not delay. We remember
our brothers and sisters there who are suffering alongside and pray Lord, that You will
give us the ability to stand together with them – in prayer and in action. Let us not do
nothing.
Free us all from the sin of indifference, apathy, contempt and violence which only
brings hatred, killing and death. Free our minds from being easily influenced by media
bias and false reporting. Free the souls and hearts of the Israelis and Palestinians from
hurting each other. Give liberation, freedom and dignity to the people of Gaza and the
West Bank who live under trials, threats and blockades. Guide the leaders in Israel and
Palestine; purify their minds and hearts to become true servants of their peoples. Don’t
let evil men take advantage of the situation to embolden wicked deeds. Speak Your
words of love for all to hear; guide us to justice in all lands. Grant us power and
courage to proclaim Your reign, and bridge the gaps that divide and unsettle us.
All this we ask in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shared our humanity, and in
the power of the Holy Spirit, who prays in and with us all. Amen
