CCA update - Letter on Aung San Suu KyiDear CCA members: The Christian Conference of Asia joins the United Nations, Amnesty International, ASEAN and the international community in calling on the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) to bring justice to Aung San Suu Kyi and others being held illegally for their immediate release. We also support the international campaign for the release of the Nobel laureate before her house detention expires on 27 May 2009. The United Nations Group on on Arbitrary Detention said that the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi was a violation of both international humanitarian law and Myanmar's domestic legislation. We believe that another travesty of justice was done when Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested and brought to trial accused of violating the terms of her house arrest after an American intruder took liberty to stay at her lakeside home in Yangon without official permission. The world community believes charges against the Nobel laureate are designed to keep her from participating in the coming elections in 2010. We urge all member Churches and Councils of CCA to continuing praying and extending practical and solidarity support to the Myanmar Council of Churches and all its members in these difficult and challenging times. Faithfully yours, PRAWATE KHID-ARN 22 May 2009 |
