Message of Solidarity with the Churches and People of Pakistan

Dear Mr. Azariah,

The CCM is following with great concern the sad political developments in Pakistan with the declaration of National Emergency and the suspension of the Constitution by President Musharraf.

We have noted the civil unrest that has resulted in judges and lawyers being arrested, and the clampdown of the Media.

Amidst the growing tensions, we join the National Council of Churches in Pakistan in calling the Pakistani government to reinstate the constitution, respect the rule of law and safeguard the independence of the judiciary in Pakistan.

We stand in solidarity with the churches and the people of Pakistan as they struggle for democracy.
